In this article it is first suggested that the letter sent by a Mongolian prince in 1237 to the King of Hungary Bela IV was actually written in Persian. Then is traced back the work carried out by the interpreters during the official talks in their translation of the documents written during the papal missions to the Mongols in 1245-1248. It is likely that Giovanni di Pian di Carpine intentionally softened the content of khan Güyuk’s letter to Pope Innocent IV. Finally, it is confirmed that the archbishop Peter of Russia, while reporting about the duration of the Mongolian calamity at the Council of Lyons, put forward an idea which had been worked out by the Russian ecclesiastical world rather than a programme or a belief of the Mongols.
