Filumena trans-lated from the backstreets of Naples to the World Stage

Abstract

Comparing 4 English versions of Eduardo de Filippo's Neapolitan play "Filumena Marturano" and some reviews of their stage performances. Speculating on whether translation/adaptation styles can be gender related; too many variables concerning not only gender but also, at least, period when translated, expectations about audience preferences, depth of knowledge of the languages/cultures involved, paralinguistic and non-verbal aspects of actors' performance, etc, warn against attempting facile correlations.
