Abstract

The author supplements Santoro’s interpretation of the Gandharan relief kept in the Karachi National Museum, no. N.M. 1982 (Santoro 2002: fig.11, here tav.Ia), with a further reading traceable to the Lalitavistara XV, 91. According to this passage, in fact, the goddess is at first desperate for Siddhārtha’s Great Departure, but later she must accept the reality of such a renunciation. This conflicting mood can explain the double appearance of the goddess in the relief under examination.
