Alcune questioni relative alla definizione e classificazione delle xuci

Abstract

Xuci have always been considered from a grammatical or semantic point of view, but they play an important role in [ the] wenyan, in conveying not only grammatical, but also rhetorical, stylistic, phonological functions. This paper deals with the question concerning the definition and classification of xuci by reviewing the most relevant theories proposed by both Western and Chinese scholars, and the main reason why this question is still far from being solved. It points out the importance of redefining the traditional terminology used by Western scholars which is too influenced by Western terms and concepts. Finally, arguments are put forward to support the thesis thet this system of dividing Chinese words in shici and xuci is too strict and limited to reflect such a complex linguistic reality.
