Abstract

In contemporary Morocco, the presence and interaction between Arabic (literary and dialects), Berber, French (legacy of the colonial past) and to a small extent Spanish, generates a competition - especially between French and Arabic - for the symbolic domination that goes over the cultural and social field, bearing on the political framework. Favouring a socio-political approach, we will focus on the use of the different languages in the country in the technological, educational, political spheres and in the mass media, in order to point out the relevance of the use of a specific language in the power wielding for the continuity of the ruling classes.
