Abstract

This study examines the vocabulary of the early Syriac versions of the Gospels. The following terms have been investigated: "law", "passover", "to crucify", "face", "salvation" and "teacher". It is highly probable that the authors of the Old Syriac Gospels and Tatian used different Syriac terms in their translations. The antiquity of the usage of the terms employed by the Old Syriac Gospels demonstrates that a link exists between the community that produced this version and the first Christian Aramaic-speaking community.
